Staying Home Isn’t Living
Watching the week go by from inside four walls. Hearing about things others are doing and knowing you could be part of it too — if only getting there, or feeling comfortable, wasn’t so hard.
Isolation is one of the most common and most damaging experiences for people living with disability. It affects mental health, confidence, physical wellbeing, and the sense that life has meaning and momentum.
NDIS Community Participation support exists to change that. At Enable Horizon, we help Perth participants get out, connect, and genuinely take part — in activities they choose, at a pace that works for them, with a support worker they trust beside them.

What Is NDIS Community Participation?
Social and Community Participation is an NDIS-funded support under Core Supports (Category 04) that helps participants engage in social, recreational, and community activities outside the home.
The funding does not pay for the activity itself — it pays for the support worker’s time and assistance that makes participation possible. This includes helping you get there, supporting you while you are there, and helping you get home.
It can be used for:
- Individual (1:1) support — a dedicated support worker accompanies you to activities of your choice
- Group support — joining structured group programs with other participants and a shared support worker
Many participants use a combination of both depending on the activity and their comfort level.
NDIS support item numbers and pricing arrangements are updated periodically. We recommend confirming the relevant line items with your support coordinator or the latest NDIS Pricing Arrangements guide.
What Kind of Activities Can I Do?
The short answer: almost anything that connects you to your community and aligns with your NDIS goals. Here are some examples:

Social & Recreational
- Joining a sports team, swimming group, or fitness class
- Arts, crafts, music, or drama programs
- Movie outings, dining out, or visiting local attractions
- Library visits, reading groups, or hobby clubs

Community & Civic
- Volunteering with a local organisation
- Attending community events, markets, or festivals
- Joining cultural, religious, or cultural heritage groups
- Connecting with peer support networks

Learning & Development
- Attending workshops, short courses, or skill-building programs
- Exploring vocational interests before entering employment
- Building social skills through regular group interaction
- Trying new activities to discover what you enjoy

How It Works
- Step 1 — Tell Us What You’re Interested In We start with a conversation about what you enjoy, what you would like to try, and what your NDIS goals say. There is no fixed list. If it connects you to your community and fits your plan, we work to make it happen.
- Step 2 — We Match You With the Right Support Worker We aim to match you with a support worker who fits your personality, communication style, and interests — not just whoever is available. Familiarity matters, and we know it.
- Step 3 — We Support You to Participate Your support worker accompanies you to activities, assists you while you are there, and helps you build confidence over time. They are there to support — not to take over.
- Step 4 — We Review and Adjust As your confidence, interests, or goals change, your support changes with them. We keep your support coordinator and family informed throughout.

Individual vs Group Support — Which Is Right for You?
- Individual (1:1) Support Best for participants who prefer one-on-one attention, are trying something new, have higher support needs, or want to pursue a specific activity not available in a group setting. Your support worker is entirely focused on you.
- Group / Centre Activities Best for participants who enjoy social connection, want to meet others, or benefit from a structured program. Group support is also more cost-effective, meaning your NDIS funding goes further. Enable Horizon can connect you to suitable group programs in your area.
Not sure which suits you? We can talk it through — many participants start 1:1 and gradually move toward group activities as their confidence grows.

What Our Participants Say
I had not left the house much for over a year before Enable Horizon got involved. My support worker helped me join a local art group. It sounds small, but it changed everything — I now look forward to going out every week.
— Participant, Gosnells

Some participants use their Core Supports budget for worker time and pay activity costs separately, or access subsidised community programs. We can help you understand what applies to your plan.
